Yoga is a great adjunct to personal therapy. In difficult times we have one constant that we can return to for recentering: our breath. The empirically based research (CBT, Mindfulness, etc.) has shown that breath is a barometer for difficulty. Fortunately, we have the ability to control this barometer.
Whether we are struggling with mind, body or spirit, the breath is a consistent companion that we can turn to for solace, in the face of discomfort. I work with clients to develop breathing techniques to use as a support through difficulty.
Yoga is a physical practice that teaches us to deepen our breath in the face of difficulty. Yoga can be seen as a metaphor for therapy treatment- learning how to relax into difficulty and challenge. In yoga we stop talking about the theory of using breath as a vehicle, and we simply live it by practicing and engaging in it.
Certain yoga postures are designed as anti-depressants. They open our bodies in ways that can decrease depression through the process of opening our shoulders and hearts, relaxing our bodies and minds, and decreasing the cycle of negative/ spinning thoughts. It is also tremendous for reducing anxiety. Please see the article on this in the Resources tab.
